Russian poets again

In one of the first entries of this blog, I wrote something about Anna Ahmatova, a Russian poet. I also mentioned D.M. Thomas's The Flute Player, that is about Ahmatova and her friends, including Marina Tvetayeva . For some reason I forgot the Mandelstams (Osip and Nadezha) who were among them, too.

Now I came across Paul Auster's first book, The Invention of Solitude. Auster often has great stories about other authors, in this book he mentions Dr G. Altschuller delivering Tvetayeva's baby in dismal conditions in a village outside Prague 1925. According to him, Tvetayeva was constantly smoking during the labour.
