In "Ohrana" (it's indeed a Russian word meaning shelter, I've been told) Jari Tervo has his main character Attila mention something about photography. It goes something like this: we overinterpret photographs; if I happen to look aside when the shutter closes people will later think I was always jittery, though it was just a reflection that caught my eye. Likewise, if I happen to wear something new, people will remember what a dandy I was, if I happen to put on my old coat, people will think I was always stingy.
Yup, that's how it is.. at least it was, before digital photography and youtube videos that allow us to publish pictures of ourselves in the web with all our belongings and uncontrolled eye movements.
Ages ago I wrote in this blog that I had not seen many good accounts (in fiction) about U.S. policies after 9/11. I came across something in Roth's Exit Ghost.
